Match: Anselmo Moreno v Mahyar Monshipour
Date: 04-07-2009 Title: WBA Bantamweight Title
Weight: Bantamweight
Venue: Parc des expositions, Poitiers, Vienne, France
Prediction: Moreno Points win
A very interesting contest both guys have great records and both have competed at a similar standard. Champion Moreno has to be the favourite but Monshipour was the WBA champion at the weight above for a long time making 5 defences of the belt, so he should not be ruled out here, it promises to be a great fight and will probably be left in the hands of the judges to decide the winner.
Match: Alexander Dimitrenko v Eddie Chambers
Date: 04-07-2009
Weight: Heavyweight
Venue: Color Line Arena, Altona, Hamburg, Germany
Prediction: Dimitrenko late stoppage
Fast Eddie Chambers is coming off the best win of his career over former WBC champion Samuel Peter, however neither men looked great in that fight, for some reason Chambers is not willing to make the sacrifices needed to become a champion, he has all the skills and a great chin, but his stamina is questionable and this usually is more than obvious in the ways he fights. The last time he came out to Germany although looking better than Povetkin he was just unwilling to push himself in the fight and suffered his first defeat. Now he is taking on the 6’7” 250lbs man mountain Dimitrenko, I am not overly impressed with Dimitrenko but I think the type of fighter that will beat him is a puncher, Eddie is certainly not that with on 18 wins inside the distance. Dimitrenko will also certainly test Chambers chin, this should be an interesting fight, not a classic but interesting. I am going for a Dimitrenko win, potentially inside the distance.
Match: Souleymane M'baye v Colin Lynes
Date: 03-07-2009 Title: European Light Welterweight Title
Weight: Light Welterweight
Venue: Palais des Sport Marcel Cerdan, Levallois-Perret, Hauts-de-Seine, France
Prediction: M'Baye points win
After the withdrawal of Paul McKloskey Colin Lynes has jumped in very late notice, Lynes was on the best run of his career winning the British and European title at the end of 2007, however after a debatable split decision loss to Gianluca Branco and then a loss to McKloskey, Lynes disappeared off the grid a little. Now after being out of the ring for over 6 months it will be interesting to see whether Lynes can rise to the occasion against the former WBA champion M’Baye. M’Baye has also had a tough time as of late losing 2 of his last 4, he is however coming off a good win over Barrie Jones. He has also been out of the ring for over 6 months, but he was preparing to fight McKloskey so he should be the better prepared of the two. I think the fact that the fight is being held in France is also a big advantage for M’Baye and although usually French judging is known to be pretty fair if it is close which I think it will be if Lynes can bring his A game it should go in the favour of M’Baye. I am going for M’Baye points win, not with 100% conviction as I would like to see Lynes win it after he was robbed in Italy, and win back his European title.
Match: Ali Chebah v Fidel Monterrosa Munoz
Date: 03-07-2009
Weight: Light Welterweight
Venue: Palais des Sport Marcel Cerdan, Levallois-Perret, Hauts-de-Seine, France
Prediction: Chebah points win
What a strange fight to take for Munoz he has been carried for the majority of his career, his last 3 opponents have all had negative records and from his 19 wins he has only faced 2 opponents with positive records. Now to step in the ring with someone like Chebah will certainly be a baptism of fire. Never rule out an undefeated fighters especially one that can punch but this should be Chebah’s fight all night.
Match: Grigory Drozd v Darnell Wilson
Date: 02-07-2009
Weight: Cruiserweight
Venue: Sport Complex Krylatskoe, Moscow, Russia
Prediction: Drozd Points win
After a poor performance in the contender series 4 Darnell Wilson is looking to get back on track, unfortunately he has chosen a rather difficult route, taking on Russian contender Drozd in his own back yard. Wilson has a punchers chance here at best, Drozd has competed at a high level so is not untested but he has been knocked out before, in 2006 when he was stopped in 5 rounds by former WBA champion Firat Arslan. Wilson is tough and has never been stopped, so I imagine that this fight will go one of two was, Wilson stoppage win or Drozd points win, I am favouring the latter.
Match: Jean Marc Monrose v Steve Herelius
Date: 27-06-2009
Weight: Cruiserweight
Venue: La Palestre, Le Cannet, Alpes-Maritimes, France
Prediction: Monrose Points win
A rematch between the two, Herelius won the first bout, a big surprise in many people’s eyes including my own, as Herelius although his record was good had only beaten limited opponents. It was a close decision, I am not sure Monrose is too good in the later rounds, he is dangerous in the opening 5-6 rounds but seems to fade, the same happened with Huck after a good start he faded to the point where he was stopped in the 12th and final round. Maybe it is in his preparation, but he needs to address this weakness if he wants to achieve the heights he is capable of. He needs to turn things around as he is coming 2 losses, revenge over Herelius would be a great start, he has the ability but does he have the dedication, we will see.
Match: Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam v Gennady Martirosyan
Date: 27-06-2009
Weight: Middleweight
Venue: La Palestre, Le Cannet, Alpes-Maritimes, France
Prediction: N’Jikam Points win
A great fight in the making, both of these guys will be desperate to impress and move onto the next level. Martirosyan has lost earlier in his career but has turned things around and has now established himself as a genuine contender. N’Jikam has progressed nicely to 19-0 and already faced some stiff opposition; the winner will be looking towards a title fight, the loser left to rebuild. I think N’Jikam may just be too tough.
Match: Arthur Abraham v Mahir Oral
Date: 27-06-2009 Title: IBF Middleweight Title
Weight: Middleweight
Venue: Max Schmeling Halle, Prenzlauer Berg, Berlin, Germany
Prediction: Abraham Points win
A huge step up for prospect Oral, he has been very inactive due to hand problems over the last year or so and a number of big fights have fallen by the wayside. Abraham is probably the best middleweight on the planet, and to be honest i can’t see anyone being a threat to him, Oral may push him but in regards to beating him, I can’t see it.
Match: Jorge Linares v Josafat Perez
Date: 27-06-2009 Title: WBA Super Featherweight Title
Weight: Super Featherweight
Venue: Plaza de Toros, Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico
Prediction: Linares mid to late stoppage
An easy defence of the WBA title for Linares, again I really don’t understand what the WBA are doing the number of sanctioned title fights with a complete joke opponent seems to be increasing all the time, Perez is coming off a loss to a guy with 17 losses. Joke fight, Linares wins easy.
Match: Victor Ortiz v Marcos Rene Maidana
Date: 27-06-2009 Title: Interim WBA Light Welterweight Title
Weight: Light Welterweight
Venue: Staples Center, Los Angeles, California, United States
Prediction: Ortiz late stoppage
On paper this looks like another Argentinean fighter with a good record being thrown to the wolves against a top American prospect, however, Maidana has already been thrown in with a good opponent in WBA champion Andriy Kotelnik and pushed him hard. This fight is for the interim title and would set either of these guys in the right direction to get the big fights in the division. Ortiz is the obvious favourite, but Maidana can punch so don’t rule him out.
